Before Waste Management of Oklahoma purchased the Southern Plains Landfill near Alex, the facility was riddled with environmental hazards, beset by complaining citizens and was an eyesore to the surrounding communities. However, things quickly changed when Jim Meinholz and his staff from Waste Management took control of the situation. They quickly addressed the problem of wind-blown paper by using daily cover to reduce the unsightly and pollution-causing debris by 99%.

To improve the aesthetic appearance of the problem facility and to reduce soil erosion, cedar trees were brought in, grasses and other vegetation were planted and a sedimentation pond was constructed. Significant positive changes at the landfill have changed an eyesore into a source of pride in southwestern Oklahoma.
