Mayor Sid Bearden and the Ada City Council challenged six local
businesses to donate $750 each to establish a "Clean Up Ada" crusade.
An immediate positive response gave the campaign its initial $4,500
budget and the work began. The program became a city-wide effort to
make Ada more attractive to citizens, visitors and potential
businesses.
A number of elements were designed to accomplish the
goal. Ada's spring clean-up expanded to include the fall, and
volunteers chipped in to clean up for those who were unable to do it
themselves in a true community spirit. Group competitions were
organized with cash prizes for the greatest improvements. The city
council approved a budget for Ada's first-ever Household Hazardous
Waste Collection Event so successful that it will become an annual
event. Throughout the year-long project, the local newspaper provided
invaluable support. Ada has shown that a small rural community can make
awfully big things happen.
