SCOTT THOMPSON - KOTV 6 Tulsa
Scott Thompson is an environmental enthusiast who regularly covers
subjects near and dear to the hearts of Keep Oklahoma Beautiful members
and indeed everyone and anyone who loves this beautiful state. In this
winning entry, Thompson and his photographer Grant Gerondale traveled
to the Sierra Madre mountains near Mexico City to document the amazing
spectacle of the monarch butterfly migration.
The resulting television segments titled "Wings of
Gold" was not only a beautiful piece but was of truly great interest
here at home since eastern Oklahoma is a part of the butterfly's
habitat. Habitat loss threatens to destroy the beautiful monarch and
the segment showed the perilous journey.
Most television reporters would have stopped there and that would have
been a super job, but Scott took the project even one step further. He
published a butterfly guide which included suggestions of
butterfly-friendly plants and where and how to plant them in the home
landscape. It included a contact and resources guide as well. Within
four days of making the offer on the air, more than 3800 guides had
been mailed. That's viewership, that's environmental education and THAT SPELLS GREAT NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA'S ENVIRONMENT!
