THE NEWKIRK JUNIOR MAIN STREET PGM
In March of 1997, a group of four middle school students held the first
planning meeting for what would become the Newkirk JUNIOR Main Street
Program, the first of its kind in the nation. Having been introduced to
the Main Street program through a slide show in their 8th grade social
studies class, the students became fascinated with the beautiful
buildings and the heritage of their community. They wanted to have an
active part in preserving those buildings and the heritage. And that's
what they set out to do with a mission statement that reads "TO IMPROVE
AND PRESERVE THE FUTURE OF NEWKIRK'S DOWNTOWN HERITAGE AND KEEP THE
PRIDE THE TOWN HAS DEVELOPED IN THE LAST 100 YEARS."
These ambitious young people have kept up their amazing work,
stepping up their pace rather than ever slacking off. Their efforts in
cleaning up, repairing, restoring and maintaining Newkirk have earned
them not only the respect of the town but also of the state and the
nation. This group has been highly recognized for their work, earning
numerous awards and honors. And this only spurs them on to greater
heights. KEEP OKLAHOMA BEAUTIFUL is pleased to join the ranks of all
those who know without a doubt that THE NEWKIRK JUNIOR MAIN STREET PROGRAM IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA'S ENVIRONMENT.
