In the aftermath of the devastating terrorist attack
on September 11, 2001, the board of directors of Up With Trees knew
Tulsans would be seeking a way to express their sorrow and grief for
those who lost their lives, as well as offer respect for the many
heroes who were part of the rescue efforts.
The Up With Trees answer was to organize and create a living memorial of
one tree for each of the 84 countries directly affected by the tragedy
and to put the memorial on a highly visible four and one-half acre
median on Interstate 244. The site was further enhanced with donations
of a flagpole, two large remembrance signs, a large metal globe of the
world and special lighting.
The judges noted this award-winning project tied together
involvement from all sectors of the community, has a great design and a
long-term effect. We agree with the many V.I.P.s who attended the
dedication ceremony in April that UP WITH TREES AND ITS SEPTEMBER 11TH MEMORIAL IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT OF LOVE IN OKLAHOMA!
