In Newkirk, she's simply known as "The Can Lady" ….
and for good reason. It is estimated that Sue Roy has collected and
recycled more than five tons of aluminum cans since 1990.
Following
her frequent drives to sell the cans in Ponca City, she donates the
proceeds to assist the Boy Scout program and the city library. She also
regularly picks up litter and recycles plastic, paper and glass; not
for money, of course, but because of her desire for a healthy, clean
and beautiful environment.
Our judges call her "amazingly dedicated". We salute her not
only for that dedication, but also for her achievement in inspiring
half of Newkirk to become recyclers. Sue Roy is good news and a great
example for recycling in Oklahoma.
