Long considered an embarrassing blight to the
beautiful city of Ardmore, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe overpass
area on Lake Murray Drive, seemed to defy all attempts at improvement.
Until, that is, retired SBC engineer, Kay Watson, took it on as a
priority two years ago.
Nicknamed "the little engineer that could," Kay met every
obstacle - and there were many - with a determination to keep seeking
solutions. She orchestrated a partnership with the railroad, the city,
businesses and the Ardmore Beautification Council that kept things
moving. The transformation was completed this past January with a
graffiti deterrent, new lighting, new landscaping, fresh paint, and
sealed concrete.
Our judges were enthusiastic with their praise for this as an excellent
effort led by an outstanding volunteer. For creating a streetscape well
worth celebrating, Kay Watson is right on track with good news for
Oklahoma.
