Spearheading Newkirk’s annual Great American Cleanup efforts for the past five years have been the energetic young students of the Newkirk Junior Main Street program, the first-ever such program in America.
This spring, they motivated 262 volunteers – 12 percent of the total population – into picking up nearly two tons of litter and debris. More than 26 miles of streets and roads were cleaned in the process.
The judges noted the great partnerships formed along the way as well as the impressive participation rate. The youth of the Newkirk Junior Main Street program continue to pick up accolades for taking a leadership role and that’s good news for a cleaner Oklahoma.
