Community Effort Award (population over 25,000) - City of Bartlesville: Community Accessible Park
A magical transformation has taken place in Bartlesville. What once was a two-and-a-half acre plot of land with nothing but trash and high grass, now is home to a very special park. Believing that all children, including those with disabilities, deserved an opportunity to play with their peers, the Bartlesville Uptown Civitan Club has turned a dynamic vision into an exciting reality.
The Civitans employed a highly polished campaign to raise over a third of the funds needed to create this safe and supportive playground for ALL children. A major state grant, volunteer labor, donated items, and investments of city labor, equipment and supplies all came together to build the park and playground.
Our judges did not hold back their praise …. “This is an outstanding lesson to all of us about the potential power of our deeds,” one said. Another said, “Communities everywhere should look to this project and take action!”
This leadership has taught us that disabilities should never prevent a child from enjoying childhood.
City of Bartlesville and your Uptown Civitan Club, you have demonstrated excellence in creating a beautiful gift every member of the community now enjoys. You are inspirations to every town in Oklahoma, and tonight we salute you!
