Nonprofit Organization Award (annual budget more than $100,000) for Education & Promotion - Downtown Tulsa Rotary Club
Beautification projects can lead to powerful cultural changes. Anyone who doubts that should look at what happened with Celia Clinton Elementary School in Tulsa and its surrounding neighborhood after the Downtown Tulsa Rotary Club volunteers went to work.
The first phase involved beautifying the land around the school which is situated in an economically depressed area.
Children, teachers and Rotarians worked side-by-side to landscape the school. As the community began to take pride in the beauty they had created, they realized they could improve their entire neighborhood.
The second part came with the creation of a garden with demonstration beds of Oklahoma native plants and trees. The garden is an outdoor laboratory, used in a variety of ways by the teachers.
As the judges noted, the school’s principal has credited the involvement of the Rotarians with playing an instrumental role in removing the school from the federal low performing list. Also, there is less litter, less crime and new construction going on in the neighborhood.
Downtown Tulsa Rotarians, the excellence you demonstrated in combining beautification with education and pride is an inspiration to economically-challenged areas throughout Oklahoma, and tonight we salute you!
