If there is any one organization that lays complete waste to the persistent but wrong idea that Oklahoma is dusty and
dull, it would be our Towering Sprit Award winner, Oklahoma Scenic Byways.
This is an organization dedicated to improving and preserving Oklahoma!s environment, economically and culturally. It
also promotes the importance of our small communities while emphasizing our state!s rich history.
Surf over to “www.okscenicbyways.org” and enjoy the simple -- but rich in content -- guide to carefully evaluated and
certi?ed roads winding through some of the most spectacular landscape in the nation. So far, six byways have been
designated, but more are being brought on.
Formed from a collaborative partnership of the University of Oklahoma Outreach and the Oklahoma Department of
Transportation, and led by the talented Pamela Lewis, the program is rapidly expanding and helping to lead thousands of
people on journeys that will be cherished memories for years to come.
The impact of this program on the communities along the byways and on the state!s image has been far-reaching and
stunningly impressive. The great news is that even more great Oklahoma scenic byways are just around the bend.
For leading all of us on glorious roads of discovery, Oklahoma Scenic Byways, you are our Towering Spirit.
