When you learn what the University of Central Oklahoma has done since making the bold decision in 2004 to be green-
energy dependent by this year, you!ll have no doubt that it is at the forefront of a major – and important – movement.
UCO has become 100 percent green in its energy usage by focusing on wind power, on-site creation of bio-diesel,
enhancing energy performance campus-wide, eliminating waste, recycling, reducing transportation needs, and establishing
several other new “green” programs. Not only has the university signi?cantly reduced its carbon footprint, it is reaping hundreds
of thousands of dollars in savings.
Along the way, UCO has begun several beauti?cation and landscaping initiatives for its 210-acre campus with an aim of
becoming a botanical garden by 2012. The university also has earmarked millions of dollars for historic renovations.
More than one judge actually exclaimed “Wow!” for the stunning levels of success of the “Being Green” program. They
have become not only heroic environmental stewards, but are being exemplary mentors to a student body that will carry this ethic
into the future.
For trail-blazing work that should inspire every campus across the nation, our ?rst-ever Vanguard Award proudly goes to
the University of Central Oklahoma.
