Volunteers are the heart and soul of most beautification projects. In Shawnee, one volunteer has emerged to lead others by his energetic example and to make a deep and lasting impact on the community he loves. Tom Terry describes his role quite simply as finding things to do and then finding the people to do it. If only this was as simple as it sounds, but most of us know better. Of course Tom gives credit for the success of projects to those who volunteer with him, like the ones who helped him distribute 18-thousand trees from the Tree Bank and Apache during the first week of November. He also shines the spotlight on the volunteers from the garden clubs in Shawnee who are creating a beautiful pocket park downtown, comprised of Oklahoma native plants. The best leaders – like Tom -- know not only how to find -- but also how to motivate and honor those working with them. As president of the Shawnee Garden Council and as chair of the Shawnee Chamber’s Beautification Committee, Tom also gets to share his vision of a Shawnee known for its public and private landscapes, as well as its welcoming appearance of businesses. Tom is a one-man wonder. He’s not just planting trees or teaching gardening or educating kids about the environment…. he is building community! For being the person every town would treasure, congratulations to Tom Terry, our 2008 Champion Volunteer!
