While
parts of the state were hit last December with a devastating ice storm,
the people of Muskogee had faced an ice storm 11 months earlier in
January. Among the damaged areas was the heavily-traveled North Main
Street corridor which featured 100 Bradford pear trees. Instead of just
replanting the boulevard, the Parks and Recreation staff decided to
give it a full makeover. Bountiful beds with trees and shrubs were
created, and now there are more than 280 individual plants that display
beauty and color nine months a year. Our judges noted the judicious use
of volunteers, the diverse project partners, and how it turned ice
storm damage into a lasting plus with gorgeous results. We’re happy to
plant this year’s Environmental Excellence Award for Local Government
with the Muskogee Parks and Recreation Department!
