Community of Alva, Oklahoma Beautification Committee

Two years ago, Alva began to experience a new community pride with cleanup efforts and beautification projects lead by the Alva Beautification Committee. As a result of the their first major community project, an 1893 historic building

got a new coat of paint. This building is now home to the Cherokee Strip Museum.

Celebrating their 10th year, Ardmore Beautification Council is a non-profit organization that dedicates themselves to beautification

and education in the Ardmore community. Through ABC projects, more than $1,000,000 has been put back into the community.

Located in the heart of Ardmore is a pergola, built in 1928 as a WWI Veteran's Memorial. A site now used

for many occasions from weddings to community events. This pergola had face paint peelings and faded doors, but thanks to another effort by ABC, the pergola now stands proud.

Tucked away in Noble County is the Town of Billings, a small community of 500.

In the heart of Billings sits the Henery Bellmon Library (named for the late Governor of Oklahoma), which has an unsightly east wall.

In an effort to keep their downtown looking nice, volunteers applied a fresh coat.

Collinsville Downtown is a Main Street Program that partners with the Department of Commerce and the National

Trust for Historic Preservation to make constant improvements.With more than seven years of endless volunteer hours,

Brad Francis has helped renovate the Collinsville Downtown historic building. In gracious acknowledgment,

the community joined hands to thank Mr. Francis by painting his local business.

The Kiwanis Club has served children of Cordell community through its annual college scholarship presented to a

graduating senior or sponsoring local high school tournaments. Lately, they have been lending

a hand to their local Girl Scouts. An historical building donated to the city serves the Scout program

of Cordell and Washita counties. Community members gathered together to repaint the structure,

giving it a fresh new look.

The Main Street program of Durant pulled community members together to change the way one building

looks. A former restaurant is now a back ground for many photos as folks stop to get their picture taken

with a "Painted Horse", a public art project that Durant has recently unveiled.

Formed in 2004, PAC has been instrumental in cleaning up Eldorado. One of the PAC tools is a

"Facepaint Project" where downtown buildings are cleaned and painted. The building at 500 Main St.

is one such building.

Haileyville, Oklahoma is a small community of about 900 citizens who are anxious to get a new

business in town and want to help in any way possible. The Haileyville Cafe has withstood

generations and now is under remodeling. To help pave the road to sweet tea and desserts, community

members volunteered time to paint the cafe.

In an effort to preserve a community for future generations, this community joined hands and created We Love Hollis.

Fed up with generations leaving for better jobs, city officials, school administrators, local groups/organizations, council

members and churches rallied together to change the appearance of their community...one project at a time.

The New Beginnings Church is a spotlight seen at every angle when passing through this town.

Idabel Main Street is a non-profit, volunteer organization with only one paid staff member. There

purpose is to revitalize the downtown areas and promote businesses. Several years ago, a vacant

downtown building collapsed and was condemned. An exterior wall of that building connects to

an active local business. Main Street volunteers transformed the wall by adding a coat of paint.

A city devoted to turning things around, Konawa is full of citizens that are willing to help

perserve and improve the appearance of their community. The old bus depot located at

500 North Broadway has significant historical meaning to Konawa. A fresh coat of paint is

just what the city needed to show how much they care.

New on the scene to the Main Street program, Laverne is demonstrating to their community that

improvements can be done! The "old Feed Store" sits off the highway leading into town. With faded and

worn paint, citizens were in fear of losing appeal. Laverne gained a rising sense of pride when volunteers

painted the store.

The city of Minco was settled in 1980. A rural community sitting southwest of Oklahoma City,

Minco is an agricultural area with an abundance of wheat and cotton farming as well as

ranching. Serving as a focal point for this community is the Minco Municipal Building. This building

is the home to City Hall and the Police Department. City employees and local police have

joined forces to give this building a new look.

The Mystery Shop Consignment and Donations - Laverne

Located in downtown Laverne, this consignment shop only helps the community with their business.

They also donated items to the Indian Mission. The paint was wearing down and exposing concrete.

This building also has a lot of history with the community and today is looking nicer with a new coat

of paint.

Pride in McAlester is a nonprofit group of concerned citizens formed with the intent to cleanup

and beautify the City of McAlester. Sitting in the middle of McAlester is the old Love

Bottling Plant that screamed for attention. PIM hopes the new look will inspire other business

owners to improve their curb side appeal.

Downtown Muskogee is part of a large painting project in the Main Street District. Although the

Salvation Army sat right outside their boundaries, they were drawn to provide assistance. On the

other side of town, Sonic Drive-In was looking for a volunteer project. Together, the two saw this as

a win-win for all!

Driving through Nowata between Oklahoma and Kansas, it is hard to avoid the huge eyesore that was

the water storage tank. Now, the community embarks on a journey that is the Nowata Mural Project.

Applying a fresh coat of paint as a base will prepare this monstrous structure for a historical mural to be

painted by Dr. Bob Palmer. Dr. Palmer is known for his mural art work across the state including the

Centennial Murals in Bricktown.

Surrounded by pleasant looking homes, there is an unsightly structure called Town Hall. The

community of Optima was ready for change and gave this building a new look. The project was

a great project to begin cleaning up the community.

Determined Main Street PV is changing the appearance of their community, one project at a time!

Pauls Valley is home to one of four historic Crabtree Pharmacies. Built in 1920, the detailed

architecture contains the original counter, soda fountains, stools and coke machine. Volunteers

applied a fresh coat of paint, proving a "sock hop" could potentially become "hip hop"!

Main Street of Pauls Valley promotes the community's diverse, interesting and historic locations, culture

and flavor. Proving to be "not your ordinary small town", it is rich in architectural and artistic history.

One such building is the Yeatts building, completed in 1906. Located in a busy section of Pauls

Valley, the city was eager to change curb appeal and make improvements.

Dennis Green found himself driving through Pryor, Oklahoma and that was the beginning of a paint project.

As he passed Pryor Rescue Mission located on Highway 20, he felt a strong pull to pay forward his kindness. From that

moment, his Kids Paying It Forward joined volunteers from the Mission and together made a better place

that has been helping folks since the 1960's with food, clothes and shelter.

An organization where families and neighborhoods can be given dreams and believe in prosperity from poverty.

For a family that lives in this house and can not afford to have it painted themselves, Tulsa Dream Center offers a

Grandmother, raising her grandchildren and caring for their mother who is disabled, hope for a brighter future.

Red Fork Main Street has a mission to restore the Southwest Blvd. of Route 66 as the cultural,

educational and economic backbone of their community. No better place to start than the Potters

Clay Mission at 2208. The Mission assists many families, providing food and worship service for

those in need. The building once served as a feed store for customers west of the Arkansas River.

With volunteer help, it now has a more inviting look that, with combined efforts, can make a

more viable community.

Sayre Main Street is "Thinking Sayre"! Their new campaign is promoting the community, its residents

and its workforce. Thinking of a good place to start was difficult at first. It soon became apparent to

start near home...home of the Main Street that is. With four volunteers, Sayre set to make an example of

good partnership and volunteerism to the community.

Shidler Chamber is a nonprofit organization to promote and develop commercial, agricultural, industrial,

educational, social and moral interest. They join with Burbank, Foraker, Grainola and Webb City.

In 1985, the Veterans Affair deeded a building to the Chamber as a community facility. The community

volunteers set out to improve this downtown structure.
