Environmental ImprovementPhillips Petroleum Wildlife Habitat Enhancement GroupThe Eliza Creek picnic area in Bartlesville was covered in Bermuda grass and was something of a desert within the Phillips research complex...until the “Wild Bunch” took over. This team of Phillips employees and community volunteers converted Eliza Creek into a habitat for butterflies, hummingbirds, and other birds. They killed off all of the Bermuda grass, no easy feat. They brought in rocks and dug a water seep to provide a water source for the wildlife. They planted wildflowers to attract butterflies and birds. The “Wild Bunch” turned Eliza Creek into a successful new habitat. In fact, it was so successful that in November of 1999, Eliza Creek received official certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council. Work continues on new sites at the research complex, but meanwhile at Eliza Creek, bird boxes attract bluebirds; wildflowers attract butterflies; and Phillips Petroleum is fulfilling a long-standing company philosophy to provide “thoughtful environmental stewardship...and environmental education...to the community.” PHILLIPS PETROLEUM’S “WILD BUNCH” IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENT! Education and PromotionOG&E Energy Corp.OG&E Energy Corp. has a strong commitment to protecting the environment, and to that end, they have created the “Green Team.” This team works to raise public awareness of many environmental issues with programs such as “Good Things Come from Trees” with the Department of Agriculture, the Clean Air Alert program with the D.E.Q., and sponsorship of D.E.Q.’s hazardous waste collection. They hold an Open House and Environmental Fair at their Muskogee Generating Station, and they support the Connor’s State College Environmental Academy. They helped sponsor City Shine ‘99—an OKC litter pick-up campaign--and Cool Communities--a tree-planting campaign, plus they support environmental education in Oklahoma schools. They also maintain a number of alternatively-fueled vehicles in their fleet. For all their educational and promotion efforts, OG&E ENERGY CORP. IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT! Beautification and LandscapingMcCoy Tree SurgeryMcCoy Tree Surgery knows the importance of the urban forest, and they are committed to educating their employees and the public. Every McCoy’s division manager and lead foreman has the opportunity to train and test to become a Certified Arborist. McCoy’s pays the entire training cost. Last fall, a member of the McCoy team read about the Ardmore Tree Board’s "Share the Shade" program and decided to get his company involved. He saw it as a chance to share his knowledge about trees. This year, McCoy Tree Surgery planted the trees in Ardmore’s "Share the Shade" project. McCoy brought in 18 employees from seven different counties and six people from their Oklahoma City office. On a cold February Saturday, between 6 A.M. and 2 P.M. McCoy’s people planted 52 trees in the front yards of Ardmore homeowners, 34 more trees than the previous year. McCoy Tree Surgery followed up the planting with tree-care information for homeowners, proving that they are committed to educating the public and insuring healthy tree-lined streets for years to come.
