Community Effort Awards
City of Ardmore, Field of DreamsLong after Ardmore’s Walker Stadium was built, the people were still coming, but the stadium was badly in need of repairs. It was being considered for condemnation, but there was no other athletic facility in town. Two Ardmore men, attorney Glen Burns and restaurant owner Phil Tabor, dreamed of a way to rebuild the stadium, and they pursued their dream with unbridled enthusiasm. They gathered the financial support of 1000 local contributors who gave an astounding 4.85 million private dollars to the rebuilding project. They rallied the help of countless volunteers who helped install the beautiful landscaping outside the stadium.Today, the landscaping is diligently and lovingly maintained by volunteers. You will often find Glen Burns himself, carefully mowing and pruning the green spaces around the athletic field. And the Ardmore Tigers have a beautiful, comfortable, and exciting place to play and watch football. Ardmore’s Field of Dreams became a reality through the dreams of a few and the hard work of many... AND THAT COMMUNITY EFFORT IS GREAT NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT! Oklahoma City Beautification CoalitionThe Oklahoma City Beautification Coalition is a unique partnership, bringing together civic and non-profit organizations, city government, and chambers of commerce to impact community appearance in the Oklahoma City metro area. The Coalition tackled the Airport as one of their first projects. They enlisted the help of Landscape Architects to create a beautification plan for the corridor between the airport terminal and Airport Road, often the place where visitors get their first impression of the state’s capitol city. Airport officials are now in the process of the finalizing and implementing those plans. The Coalition has enacted neighborhood campaigns to clean up signs along city streets and to enforce code violations which affect community appearance. Plus, they have expanded their vision to include beautification of more than 100 miles of interstate highways in the metropolitan area; the most ambitious highway beautification plan anywhere in the country. THE OKLAHOMA CITY BEAUTIFICATION COALITION IS SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR OKLAHOMA COMMUNITIES AND THAT’S DEFINITELY GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT! See other award winners: |
