Education & Promotion

JAY HIGH SCHOOL BLUE THUMB STREAM TEAM
The Blue Thumb Stream Team from Jay High School is learning how to determine the health of local streams. These students monitor the chemical make-up of stream water by mixing certain reagents with water samples. They assess the health of a stream’s physical habitat by studying the substrate, and they monitor animal life through periodic collections of fish and insects. As students have become more familiar with the assessment process, they have realized a greater responsibility to inform the public.

Now, they take their water test kits and animal samples to public events in Delaware County, educating others about keeping the local streams clean and healthy. They created a brochure to recruit new Stream Team members. They received a grant to build a greenhouse on their campus, and they are working with city officials to plan a recycling program for Jay. In Delaware County, the JAY HIGH SCHOOL BLUE THUMB STREAM TEAM IS EXCELLENT NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT!

Beautification & Landscaping

TUSLA PUBLIC SCHOOLS SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER
On April 14, 2000, to celebrate the grand opening of the new Tulsa Public Schools Safety and Environmental Center, 2000 elementary school students gathered to plant some 2000 varieties of flowers and trees, all donated by local nurseries. Students planted redbuds and pin oaks, pansies and daisies. After planting, the students were treated to a cook-out and entertainment provided by a group of off-duty firemen.

These young gardeners participated in a celebration which they’ll remember each time they see the new building. For many years to come, they will be able to watch their trees grow and remember that they had a hand in it all. The beautification of the TPS SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA'S ENVIRONMENT!

Environmental Improvement

MOORE HIGH SCHOOL EARTHSAVERS CLUB
Members of the Moore High School EarthSavers Club are really living up to their name. They adopted a city street, which they clean twice a month. As part of the Moore Bag-a-thon, they help with city-wide litter clean-up. At their school, they sponsor “Clean Campus” and “Use Less Stuff” Week. They encourage paper recycling at MHS, and they even pulled off a successful “Paperless School Day,” when all teaching and other activities happened without using any paper. For all they do in the city and at their high school, the MOORE HIGH SCHOOL EARTHSAVERS CLUB IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT!
