Raclynn Wilcockson & Denzel Hooks- RECES herb garden REMINGTON ELEMENTARY CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
A trailblazer in more ways than one, Tulsa’s Remington Elementary Center for Environmental Studies (better known as RECES) has preserved an adjoining oak grove in several creative ways that give the students a true sense of pride and stewardship.

Just an idea in 1998, RECES already includes nature trails; a wetland; a bird sanctuary; gardens for butterflies, herbs, vegetables and flowers; a gazebo; interactive exhibits; natural murals; an archeology preservation station and more. Under the leadership of project director Mary Sue Herron, RECES has been studied by science educators from several states as a dream outdoor classroom.

Judy Fesenden- RECES principal
Judy Fesenden, principal of Remington Elementary School in Tulsa proudly accepted the KOB award of excellence.
Our judges called it a “wonderful way to put into practice the management of a natural environmental classroom.” The future includes plans to encourage financial self-sufficiency by opening RECES to the general public for sales from vegetables, herbs and compost.

REMINGTON ELEMENTARY CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENTAL FUTURE!

Beautification & Landscaping

WEST NICHOLS HILLS ELEMENTARY LANDSCAPING COMMITTEE
While the landscaping committee at West Nichols Hills Elementary consists of adults, they’ve wisely kept the students at the core of their extensive planting and clean-up projects for the past four years.

The before and after pictures show the dramatic improvements made with completely renovated flower beds, a new butterfly garden and the addition of 26 new trees. But the less-visible student activities are just as important.
Martha Swope- West Nichols Hills Elementary
Martha Swope was delighted to accept the KOB award of excellence for West Nichols Hills.

West Nichols Hills Students Every student participates in a spring clean-up and learns how to plant a bulb. Ten older students give butterfly garden tours to all the other students who can watch butterflies develop from caterpillars.

The judges said it was “a beautiful way to take the classroom outdoors and teach living environmental concern.”

FOR EDUCATION AND BEAUTIFICATION, WEST NICHOLS HILLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT!

OSU Nursery Water Quality Project

Environmental Improvement

OSU NURSERY WATER QUALITY PROJECT
A unique program that partners nursery and greenhouse leaders with extension specialists and researchers at Oklahoma State University has helped to keep the waters in Oklahoma as pristine as possible, well ahead of expected laws that will require smarter environmental practices. OSU’s Nursery Water Quality Project has earned the cooperation of nursery operators simply because they think it is the right thing to do despite the fact few will make money with it in the short term.

Dr. Sarah Kimball- OSU
Dr. Sarah Kimball accepted for the OSU Water Quality Project winning entry.
After developing a collection of best management practices and presenting them at workshops and in the classroom, the OSU team then published the “Water Quality Handbook for Nurseries” and made it available on the World Wide Web. They followed that up with training sessions and a videotape for a “capture-and-treat technology” to prevent pollution.

The judges called the program “far-reaching” and “comprehensive,” adding that it offers “an outstanding resource and instruction for prudent water protection.” OSU’S NATIONALLY ACCLAIMED NURSERY WATER QUALITY PROJECT IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S WATER RESOURCES!
