Broken Arrow Beautification Committee, Wins!
“How can we get rid of those illegal nuisance signs?” What started as a question, then a suggestion, led to the development and implementation of a Broken Arrow illegal sign removal program that earned the organization the Community Effort Award at the 2011 Environmental Excellence Awards.
For several years, the Broken Arrow Chamber’s Beautification Committee was reporting the presence if illegal signs in the city’s rights-of-way. During a City Council meeting, staff reported that city employees had removed over 20,000 illegally placed signs from the city’s rights-of-way resulting in a loss of productivity. During the same meeting the Council members voted to have a program developed and established to remove these signs. The program was soon named, Adopt-A-Corner.
This program aimed to train community volunteers to safely remove illegally placed signs. The first training session was held in September where 25 volunteers were assigned corners and intersections. Over the next three training sessions 70 of the city’s 73 arterial intersections had been adopted.
From a total of 1007 illegal signs reported by surveyors in June 2010, only 106 were reported a year later in June 2011. The Committee’s initiative and the volunteer commitment have made a lasting impact on the City’s beauty and wellness.
Every day across Oklahoma, communities are coming together to accomplish great things. With very little resources but often a lot of effort these projects have a direct impact on our state. For 25 years Keep Oklahoma Beautiful has been recognizing these great works but it is up to you to make sure we know about them. Have a project that made a difference? An initiative that made an impact?
Have you seen something in your community that needs to be recognized? Does this sound like a group or organization you know? They could be this year’s winner. We have categories (Click Here!) to fit projects big and small, private businesses and community organizations and everything in between. Nominations are open until August 10th. We want to know about it! Your efforts are an inspiration to us all. http://bit.ly/EECNom
The nomination process takes moments and we want to celebrate to you.
