University of Central Oklahoma, Wins!
College campuses are crawling with students, faculty, and staff… and their water bottles. What if the university had filling stations that encouraged the habit of reusable water bottles? That is just what the University of Central Oklahoma did, earning them the Collegiate Effort Award at the 2012 Environmental Excellence Awards.
In January 2011 the university’s Facilities Management team received a proposal to install ElKay touch-less water bottle fillers around campus in an effort to reduce bottled water consumption and the resulting waste. The team proceeded to purchase and install 26 fillers in 20 campus buildings. As of July 2012, these fillers had saved a total of 620,484 sixteen ounce bottles from entering the waste stream.
But the University didn’t stop there. They took their waste reduction efforts to the next level with the BroncH20. Launched in August 2012, the Office of Sustainability and Facilities Management team designed and developed this mobile filler station for large campus events. Constructed by the carpentry staff, the BroncH20 consists of a 12’ two-axle trailer contacting two 200 gallon water tanks, a three-stage filtration system including UV filters and four Elkay bottle fillers mounted externally.
During the first week of classes over six campus events the BroncH20 saved 3,204 bottles. The effort to reduce plastic water bottle waste has been widely embraced by students, faculty and staff and are a very visible reminder of UCO’s commitment to a sustainable campus community.
Every day across Oklahoma, communities are coming together to accomplish great things. With very little resources but often a lot of effort these projects have a direct impact on our state. For 25 years Keep Oklahoma Beautiful has been recognizing these great works but it is up to you to make sure we know about them. Have a project that made a difference? An initiative that made an impact?
Have you seen something in your community that needs to be recognized? Does this sound like a group or organization you know? They could be this year’s winner. We have categories (Click Here!) to fit projects big and small, private businesses and community organizations and everything in between. Nominations are open until August 10th. We want to know about it! Your efforts are an inspiration to us all. http://bit.ly/EECNom
The nomination process takes moments and we want to celebrate to you.
