End Litter Contest Registration Opens and New Program Announced

Oklahoma students participate in Keep Oklahoma Beautiful initiative

End Litter Video Contest and End Litter 5th Grade Plastic Bottle Cap Art Contest are programs of Keep Oklahoma Beautiful (KOB), designed to engage Oklahoma’s students to take action against litter. Registration for these programs opened August 24th.

End Litter challenges high school and college students to tackle litter and illegal dumping in a 30-second video clip that conveys that littering is costly, harmful, and downright wrong. After all entries are judged, the top four high school and college videos will be uploaded to the KOB contest website where the public will vote for their favorite video. The winning high school and college video clips are published on the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful website and YouTube page sparking a campaign to encourage personal responsibility as the foundation for keeping Oklahoma’s environment healthy. In addition, winners from each category will receive a $750 cash prize and will be recognized at the 2016 Environmental Excellence Celebration.

“It was important for me to participate in the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful video contest to visually illustrate how litter impacts our beautiful state and what the benefits are in doing your part in helping to keep Oklahoma beautiful," said Sunsinee Parker, KOB's 2014 College Winner.

Interested students must register through the Keep Oklahoma Beautiful website, www.keepoklahomabeautiful.com/end-litter-registration, no later than November 15. Completed video submissions may be made online anytime after registration until 11:59pm on December 31, 2015.

This year KOB has developed a new End Litter contest that targets 5th grade classes to take action in understanding the importance of recycling. This contest challenges 5th grade students to tackle this issue by creating a work of art from plastic bottle caps. Teachers are encouraged to take this opportunity to teach students why recycling is important and how items may be repurposed. Photos of art pieces will be posted on the KOB Facebook page where the public may vote for their favorite entry. The winning 5th grade class will receive a pizza part with KOB.

Teachers may register their classes at www.keepoklahomabeautiful.com/end-litter-5th-grade-elementary-contest. Students must submit a 150-300 word essay describing what they learned along with photos of the bottle cap art project no later than October 10 and 5:00pm.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new program. What a clever and fun way to engage our youth in recycling,” Jeanette Nance, KOB’s Executive Director said. “I look forward to all these children have for us!”
