Beautification & Landscaping- ODOT HIGHWAY TREE GRANT PROGRAM
ODOT's highway tree grant program
has added 5,960 trees.
ODOT HIGHWAY TREE GRANT PROGRAM

Since its inception in 1997, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation's (ODOT) highway tree grant program has resulted in the addition of 5,960 new trees and shrubs along Oklahoma's state roadsides.

ODOT is using more than one million dollars of federal enhancement funds to encourage communities and organizations to plant trees along highways, helping communities of all sizes to beautify their highway approaches.

Oklahoma is a diverse and beautiful state and its "front yard" of more than 150,000 acres of right of way along the 12,000 miles of state highway should contribute to its beauty. Most of the grant winners have already implemented their projects and the impact has been instant. The long term, highly visible nature of these landscapes will only improve as the trees mature. The highway tree grant program has had a major impact on the appearance of Oklahoma's roadsides and has encouraged communities to think of ways to landscape their highway entries. THE ODOT HIGHWAY TREE GRANT PROGRAM IS VERY GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA'S ENVIRONMENT!

Education & Promotion

OK FORESTRY SERVICES
Oklahoma Forestry Services and the Oklahoma Urban & Community Forestry Council have become partners in promoting the Tree City USA program throughout the state. Tree City USA was created by the National Arbor Day Foundation to challenge American cities to become better stewards of their urban forests through careful management of city trees. Forestry and the Council work diligently to offer guidance to every community that wants to adopt the Tree City USA approach to caring for its forest resources.

The two organizations have created a model recognition program to reward the achievements of these devoted friends of trees and to assure them that their work is appreciated. The Tree City Recognition Celebration is the kickoff for Arbor Week in Oklahoma. The event makes each Tree City representative an honored guest for a day of fun, pampering and networking at the state capitol. Public education and promotion of the Tree City program are continuous activities for both the Council and Forestry Services. The recognition event is growing each year and the goal is that more and more cities will attain Tree City status by planning for and protecting the Oklahoma urban forests and thereby helping to Keep Oklahoma Beautiful. OKLAHOMA FORESTRY SERVICES, THE URBAN FORESTRY COUNCIL AND TREE CITY USA ALL GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA'S ENVIRONMENT!

Environmental Improvement

JOHNSTON COUNTY SOLID WASTE TRUST AUTHORITY
Since the day they were sworn into action on June 23, 1997, the volunteer citizens of the Johnston County Solid Waste Trust Authority and their fearless leader Juanita Hackbarth, (a woman who simply doesn't know the meaning of the word "no") have stormed the county's illegal dumping problems with the zeal of highly trained soldiers.

They started their assault with the building of one lonesome convenience center, a designated site to which county residents could take their bulky disposables. Today Johnston County has 10 such sites, thanks to the "authority" and the persistence of "General Hackbarth."

Poster contests for the kids, environmental awareness educational sessions for the general public, letter writing campaigns and the gentle persuasion of local businesses to cooperate in the efforts are all effective weapons in this regiment's arsenal. In just more than two years, the volunteers have made a squeaky clean difference in Johnston County. Salute the General and give the credit to hard work and a desire to make life better. THE VOLUNTEERS OF THE JOHNSTON COUNTY SOLID WASTE TRUST AUTHORITY ARE INCREDIBLY GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA'S ENVIRONMENT!
