Education & Promotion:
CITY OF OKC PLANNING DEPARTMENT

Oklahoma City

OKC Planning Dept If you live in Oklahoma City, it's time to hug a tree. Or at least hug the people who have created the comprehensive guidebook about how to select and care for trees in central Oklahoma. The Oklahoma City Planning Department has published "Putting Down Roots," 117 pages of colorful, helpful information, and they've made it free.

"Putting Down Roots" guides users through OKC Planning Dept Awarded proper plant selection for our environment and shows color photos of each tree. It also gives tips for care, soil preparation, planting, and design considerations, along with listing valuable resources.

For its impressive quality, its strong educational values, and its availability to a large audience, the Planning Department of Oklahoma City and its "Putting Down Roots" is good news for the reforestation of Oklahoma's largest urban area.

Beautification & Landscaping:
HOOKER PARKS COMMITTEE

Hooker

Hooker Parks Transforming an area where tumbleweeds used to reign supreme into an oasis of beauty has been an ongoing labor of love and backbreaking work for the members of the Hooker Parks Committee. They took a shoestring budget and stretched it mightily to create the impressive Williams Homesteaders' Park on Highway 54.

Hooker Parks Awarded Our judges praised the imaginative use of an old shed on the property and the recycled use of picnic tables and signage from an abandoned site. Other features include western silhouettes, trees, benches, paths, a windmill, train caboose, pond, waterfall and a wide variety of flowers and shrubbery.

The Williams Homesteaders' Park is a testament to the pioneers who settled there a century ago and the dreamers and volunteers of today. For citizens and visitors alike, it is Oklahoma's handsome refuge of good news in the Panhandle region.
