Beautification & LandscapingHERB & JEANNIE ABTS - ChoctawYou've heard now about the community-wide effort to beautify NE 23rd street in Choctaw and you know that the initial vision was that of Jeannie Abts. Jeannie and her husband Herb are being honored tonight for that vision and their driving force behind the project. Each put in long hours working the soil, weeding, researching. Jeannie actually made the metal sculptures with the artistic help of Susan Johnson and assistance from the Choctaw Fire Department with the metal cutting, welding and installation. Now that the gardens are finished and so much-appreciated, the Abts have not let down for a moment. You'll find the two of them tending the gardens, mowing, watering whatever it takes four and five days every week. IT'S A SPECIAL BRAND OF LOVE OF COMMUNITY - HERB AND JEANNIE ABTS ARE GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA'S ENVIRONMENT! Education & PromotionSHARON ROBBINS - MiamiSharon Robbins works for the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality out of the Miami field office. Her supervisor, Clyde Mason, notes that she's a true professional and always performs above what is expected. But she went off the charts when, on her own initiative, she developed a simple educational program for use in elementary schools and gave Miami, Oklahoma the WORRD. W. O. R. R. D. stands for WASTE OBSERVANT: REUSE AND RECYCLE DAILY. The concept is very simple which probably explains its incredible success: Promote solid waste awareness through a campaign where adults sign a pledge stating that they will be waste observant through daily reuse and recycling. After classroom discussions, a top ten list is prepared of ideas on how to reuse and recycle. Students then take what they have learned and talk to adults, asking for their pledge to be waste observant; to get their WORRD on it. Kids don't have to collect anything but signatures. Local merchants provide prizes to the top collectors. Responses to Sharon Robbins' WORRD program have been nothing but positive in the schools in the community and throughout the OK DEQ, where the program has begun to catch fire. Environmental ImprovementOFFICER DON PRICKETT - Payne CountyIf there were 77 Don Pricketts in Oklahoma, we'd have the cleanest state in the nation! Deputy Sheriff Don Prickett began his career as a Trash Cop in December of 1997, when Payne County received an Environmental Compliance Office Program grant . As of February of this year, Officer Pricket has located more than 1,000 illegal dumps and so far more than 75% have been cleaned up. He's issued about a hundred citations for which offenders have been jailed or fined - and the total of fines is reaching nearly to an amazing $15,000! He has the complete support of the County Commissioners, the DA's office, the district judges and the county sheriff. Officer Prickett is on the job wherever he goes talking to the public about keeping our county dumps cleaned up and cautioning college students, as well as all county citizens, about the problems and the risk factors involved with illegal dumping (not to mention the fines and the community service!). Prickett was the first recipient of Payne County's Volunteer of the Year award and his picture hangs in the first floor of the courthouse. One County Commissioner said that every time she walks by Don's picture she thinks about "Keeping Oklahoma Beautiful."
