Beautification & LandscapingMark BaysMark Bays says he was just doing his job. As the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture’s urban forester, he takes care of trees for a living. So when attention turned to the Survivor Tree across from the Murrah Federal Building, Mark was asked to step in to help insure that the tree did survive. He worked with the design team to create protective structures around the tree. By hand, he dug holes for the concrete piers that would hold up the walking platform around the tree. He made certain a fence was built to keep construction equipment from damaging the tree or its roots. At each step in planning and construction of the Memorial, Mark was there to protect the great elm and to see that survivors’ wishes were honored. Mark has collected seeds and cuttings, growing new seedlings to give to victims’ families and to plant on the Memorial grounds. Every step of the way, he’s acted out of compassion, with respect and sensitivity – always going the extra mile to preserve the tree’s health. He’s done much more than his job. Bays helped a grieving community save a tree that still stands as a symbol of hope for Oklahoma’s future. For helping to preserve that hope... Education & PromotionCarolyn MathewsAt Glenpool Middle School, Carolyn Mathews’ job is maintaining the media center, but that’s just the beginning of what Carolyn does. She also organizes and oversees a successful recycling program at the school. To help make Glenpool citizens more aware of the need to conserve natural resources, she created a program exploring the human population explosion, and she was the driving force behind storm drain stenciling in Glenpool. Her 6th and 7th grade students studied the River Parks system and learned that an entire community must work together to manage the environment. That’s the message that she carries with her always, and her sphere of influence continues to grow. More storm drains need to be stenciled; more items need to be recycled; and more middle schoolers will cross her path next year. For the influence she exerts and the many programs she carries out, CAROLYN MATHEWS IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT! Environmental ImprovementJana ShaferYou’ve heard about the good news happening in Newkirk. Their Junior Main Street group is very active, weeding and planting downtown, maintaining window displays in vacant buildings, washing and waxing outdoor sculptures, and just picking up trash around the city. The driving force behind this bustling junior group is their sponsor: Jana Shafer. Jana encouraged her students to enter the Trash Poster Contest, and all four who entered won first or second place on the regional level. She helped her students as they prepared Operation Clean Sweep, the event that paired kids with adults for the week of litter clean-up. She helped her students get ready for the daunting task of speaking to groups to recruit them for Operation Clean Sweep. Jana leads by example, taking part in all of the activities that she asks her students to enter into. She inspires her students to accept responsibility for their environment and instills in them a strong sense of community service. For helping to build a new generation of environmental stewards, JANA SHAFER IS VERY GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT! See other award winners: |
