Individual Achievement AwardsJIM COSTAS, TULSABeautification & Landscaping
It would be impossible to put a value on the 15 years of leadership and volunteered services provided by Jim Costas to Up With Trees and beautification efforts throughout Tulsa. “Priceless” would be a good place to start.
Averaging 25 hours of donated time each week, Jim has been the driving force behind the September 11 Living Tree Memorial. He and his wife Alice are the primary caretakers of an arbor garden of 350 commemorative trees, and he is the very soul of the 168-tree Murrah Tree Memorial. He is the supervisor of a 390-tree planting along a major Tulsa trafficway, and is the chief organizer of the volunteers who maintain Up With Trees’ older sites.
Our judges praised his leadership, his hands-on participation and his commitment to consistent follow-through. For his creativity and innumerable contributions, JIM COSTAS IS THE ROOT OF GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S URBAN FORESTS!
Education & PromotionLISA FREDERICK, BROKEN ARROW
After reading the entry of our next winner, one judge commented, “Lisa, you make me tired!” We met and honored her son, the Broken Arrow 4-H wiz, earlier. Now it’s time to recognize some of the amazing array of contributions of his mother and role model, Lisa Frederick.
The very abbreviated list of organizations that happily count Lisa as a very active volunteer include Tulsa County 4-H, Tulsa Food Bank, Tulsa Zoo and the Tulsa County Conservation District Blue Thumb. Also, she conceptualized and promoted the thousand-square-foot Field of Dreams 4-H Outdoor Classroom that tied native Oklahoma plants to the 4-H program areas. Setting the standard high as an extremely productive and hard-working parent-volunteer, TRENT’S MOM, LISA FREDERICK IS GOOD NEWS FOR KIDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES IN OKLAHOMA! Environmental ImprovementBUSTER TERRY, OKLAHOMA CITY
Buster Terry has what most would consider to be an overwhelming job. He’s the one in charge of the appearance and safety of nearly 100 Oklahoma City school campuses. Between mowing cycles, ice removal and other regular major chores at each school, Buster somehow finds the time to do far, far more.
Working with the Oklahoma City Foundation’s Clean & Beautiful Schools program, he has been instrumental in establishing sound horticultural techniques for grounds upkeep, has advocated chemical safety and stormwater runoff programs, has supported efforts for litter-free campuses, and has improved playground safety. In the meantime, whenever a meeting is held anywhere that deals with school grounds, Buster invariably is there to answer questions and pledge his support. Leading by example with his outstanding personal commitment, BUSTER TERRY IS GOOD NEWS FOR ATTRACTIVE AND SAFE SCHOOL LANDSCAPES IN OKLAHOMA CITY! |
