Environmental Improvement:
SUE ROY

Newkirk Sue Roy

In Newkirk, she's simply known as "The Can Lady" …. and for good reason. It is estimated that Sue Roy has collected and recycled more than five tons of aluminum cans since 1990.

Sue Roy Awarded Following her frequent drives to sell the cans in Ponca City, she donates the proceeds to assist the Boy Scout program and the city library. She also regularly picks up litter and recycles plastic, paper and glass; not for money, of course, but because of her desire for a healthy, clean and beautiful environment.

Our judges call her "amazingly dedicated". We salute her not only for that dedication, but also for her achievement in inspiring half of Newkirk to become recyclers. Sue Roy is good news and a great example for recycling in Oklahoma.

Education & Promotion:
JOE LADA

Edmond

Joe Lada A little earlier, we honored the exciting efforts by Staples to recycle ink jet cartridges and., in the process, generate cash for education in Oklahoma. The genius behind that project is Edmond's Joe Lada, a district manager for Staples.

Joe Lada Awarded He wrote his first thoughts about the idea less than 14 months ago. By July, with twenty-five thousand dollars already generated in Oklahoma, Staples was inspired to take the program nationwide with a goal of raising five million dollars in just 90 days.

Joe Lada's efforts have rapidly grown into a premier national program directed at recycling the 243 million ink jet cartridges discarded each year while generating much-appreciated funds.

We're very impressed with the Staples' Recycle for Education program and we're proud to add that Joe Lada is good news for landfills and students in Oklahoma.

Beautification & Landscaping:
TOM TERRY

Shawnee

Tom Terry When Tom Terry moved to Shawnee in 1967 and began personally transforming the appearance of Oklahoma Baptist University and the city, he brought a priceless quality with him - leadership. Along with being instrumental in a wide array of campus beautification efforts, Tom has captained the Shawnee Chamber's Beautification Committee for the past six years, and has led the way with the city's Parks and Beautification Committee, its Garden Council, its Master Gardening Program and more.

Tom Terry Awarded Tom has overseen initiatives to revitalize the city's historic Redbud Festival, the planting of more trees suitable to the climate, an annual "Gardening With the Experts" symposium, and a program to transform barren areas into green oases. He even personally weeds waters those plots from plastic gallon jugs.

You can't drive around Shawnee these days without admiring what has grown from his work, and that's especially apparent on the OBU campus. Decades of dedicated service have had an incredible impact, and it's clear that Tom Terry is good news for inspiring beautiful gardening and landscaping in central Oklahoma.
