OKLAHOMA BRINGS FIVE AWARDS HOME FROM WASHINGTON, D.C.
Keep Oklahoma Beautiful, ODOT, ODEQ, PepsiCo Recycling & OKC Beautiful Recognized
Oklahoma City, OK (Feb. 1, 2015) - Keep Oklahoma Beautiful (KOB) received three awards from Keep America Beautiful (KAB) during KAB’s recent 62nd anniversary National Conference in Washington, D.C. Keep America Beautiful’s annual National Conference brought together KAB affiliate leaders from across the country to share best practices and celebrate the successes of the past year.
Keep Oklahoma Beautiful was honored for its outstanding promotion of KAB’s mission statewide and for its program support for local affiliates in Oklahoma. This award is the KAB Gold State Recognition award which distinguishes KOB as an exemplary statewide affiliate organization.
The KAB State Recognition Awards recognizes statewide affiliates that have created new and innovative programs and partnerships that further their mission, while encouraging individuals to engage in activities that build and sustain vibrant communities.
“We at KOB are extremely excited about this national recognition. Not only for ourselves but our amazing partners and affiliates. We could not do what we do without the cooperation and partnership with our state agencies and corporate sponsors,” said Jeanette Nance, Executive Director of Keep Oklahoma Beautiful. “They are instrumental in helping us persevere in our mission to keep Oklahoma’s beauty running deep!”
Keep Oklahoma Beautiful also received the State Affiliate Innovation award for their partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ). This partnership invites Oklahoma communities to become an Oklahoma Clean Community. Cities, towns and civic action organizations are encouraged to conduct waste tire collection days, participate in the KOB Great American Cleanup™, recycling events and hazardous waste collections. In the program’s first year, ODEQ and Keep Oklahoma Beautiful recognized 35 communities statewide.
“DEQ is honored to be recognized for the Oklahoma Clean Community Program,” said DEQ Executive Director Scott Thompson. “Our partnership with Keep Oklahoma Beautiful affords us the opportunity to work with communities to find practical solutions to keep our great state beautiful,” Thompson added.
During the Great American Cleanup™ (GAC) in Oklahoma, Keep Oklahoma Beautiful has the opportunity to work with many wonderful companies to offer supplies and grant dollars to their participants. KOB was recognized for their partnership with PepsiCo Recycling and Waste Management with the GAC Innovation award. The Lend-A-Bin program loans recycling bins to groups for special events. KOB records the recyclables collected and reports results to their partners.
Keep Oklahoma Beautiful also works closely with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) during the GAC in Oklahoma. ODOT received the United States State Department of Transportation Partnership Award. ODOT is a vital part of KOB’s success during the Great American Cleanup as well as being a major supporter of KOB’s programs and projects.
“ODOT continues to have a strong partnership with KOB to provide meaningful initiatives keeping Oklahoma clean and beautiful. The Department is both honored and humbled to have been nominated by KOB for the prestigious United States State Department of Transportation Partnership Award. Our partnership only makes both organizations stronger in our quest to keep Oklahoma’s beauty running deep,” said Michael Patterson, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
OKC Beautiful, an affiliate of KOB and KAB, was recognized for the work done by their teen board. They received 2nd Place for the Youth Group Project Award and were also recognized at National Conference last week. In 2014, the OKC Beautiful Teen Board installed a community garden with two raised beds at the Educare Center in Oklahoma City. The Teen Board performed all of the work installing the raised beds, while getting all of the materials, irrigation system and quality plant material donated.
Keep Oklahoma Beautiful is a statewide nonprofit organization with a mission to empower citizens to preserve and enhance the state’s natural beauty and to ensure a healthy, sustainable environment.
