Education & Promotion- Solid Waste Institute of Northeast Oklahoma

Education & Promotion

Solid Waste Institute of Northeast Oklahoma
The Solid Waste Institute of Northeast Oklahoma has a powerful message: Let’s not waste our land. The Institute covers an area of 9,000 square miles, and annually, nearly a half million tons of trash will be generated by the residents. Unfortunately, too many people in the area dispose of their trash in unacceptable and illegal ways--burning trash in barrels near their homes, burying it too close to drinking water wells, or simply dumping it along rural roadsides.

The Institute has undertaken an aggressive environmental education program, including interactive lessons in schools and programs delivered to civic organizations and other groups of adults. They have produced an informative video that is often used to focus discussions on the problems and solutions of improper waste disposal in rural areas. Their message is being received. Each county in the area now has a “trash cop,” and through education and enforcement, the waste disposal problems are getting solved. THE SOLID WASTE INSTITUTE OF NORTHEAST OKLAHOMA IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT!

Beautification & Landscaping

Moore Beautiful
Moore Beautiful first met on April 2, 1999. That day, they decided on a long-term plan for implementing and funding the beautification of the City of Moore. Thirty-one days later, when an F-5 tornado devastated much of the city, the committee was forced to change their focus, offering help to those whose homes were destroyed or heavily damaged in the storm. They offered “Welcome Home” trees to those who rebuilt their homes in the damaged areas. They placed signs and landscaping at the entrances to neighborhoods that had been in the path of the tornado. The beautification became a clear promise of restoration to the residents who were struggling to clean up and rebuild.

Since last year’s tragic storm, Moore Beautiful has been successful in creating a cooperative spirit among the various community entities, allowing everyone to accomplish MOORE for the city. ...MOORE GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT!

Environmental Improvement

Kerr Center Producer Grant Program
The Kerr Center Producer Grant Program encourages Oklahoma farmers and ranchers to adopt sustainable practices on their land. To achieve “sustainable” status, farmers and ranchers must be environmentally responsible and protect natural resources such as soil and water. They must also conserve energy and enhance wildlife habitats. Farmers and ranchers who propose innovative projects can receive cash incentives to help them implement those projects. Farmers’ projects have established buffer zones around ponds and streams, managed weeds without chemicals, and increased wildlife habitats.

The Kerr Center Producer Grant Program encourages farmers and ranchers to act as environmental stewards, and when projects are successful, others are encouraged to try similar projects on their own land. THE KERR CENTER PRODUCER GRANT PROGRAM IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT!
