THE McCLEAN TEAM IN IDABEL

When the McClean Team folks down in McCurtain County say “Let’s talk trash,” they mean it, uh, LITTER-ally. Even the name it uses – McClean – brings a smile when you discover the letters represent the words “McCurtain County Litter Education Awareness Network.”

The McClean Team’s broad coalition of organizations developed a series of ten 30-second anti-litter public service announcements that have aired since May on every radio station in the county. The ads are simple, but quite effective because they use well-known local people who seldom are heard on the radio.

KOB award of excellence from Michael Patton, president on Nov 8.

The sheriff’s office now has hired a deputy to enforce the anti-litter laws and stations beyond the county are prepared to take the campaign to a regional level. For its use of limited funds, dedication and big ideas to get an important message across, THE McCLEAN TEAM IN IDABEL IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S FIGHT AGAINST LITTER!

MAIN STREET ENID

Main Street Enid Less than two years ago, downtown Enid had 64 unsightly, neglected planter beds full of weeds. Fortunately, Enid also had the Main Street Design committee who took it upon themselves to design a masterplan, raise more than $10,000 for materials and maintenance, and recruit volunteers to make it come to life.

Main Street Design committee The photos tell it all. Main Street Enid has turned an area of neglect into an area of community pride. These bermed beds not only lend year-round beauty to downtown Enid, they have been carefully designed to control weeds and be drought-resistant.

A 24-year business owner in downtown Enid noted that the city’s improved image has helped to recruit new business and our judges hailed what they called “an incredible difference.” For turning a problem into a winning opportunity, MAIN STREET ENID IS BEAUTIFULLY GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA!

TULSA CLEAN CITIES PROGRAM

Tulsa Clean Cities Program logo As the environmental importance of alternative fuel vehicles – commonly called AFVs – grows, so does the need for accurate information about AFV ownership, fueling, and tax incentives. Addressing that need with a focused and well-defined seminar was the National AFV Day Odyssey put together by the Tulsa Clean Cities Program.

Tulsa Clean Cities member More than 80 local fleet managers and company presidents joined city, regional and state officials at the morning seminar that featured a guest from the U.S. Department of Energy and a motivational speaker. Local owners of alternative fuel vehicles – and their actual vehicles - were exhibited in an “I Love My AFV” presentation. Governor Keating and the Mayor LaFortune issued proclamations and media coverage was excellent.

For efficiently showcasing the issues and values ofAFVs, THE TULSA CLEAN CITIES PROGRAM IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE AIR WE BREATHE IN OKLAHOMA!

SHAWNEE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE

Redbud City of Oklahoma First designated Redbud City of Oklahoma over 60 years ago, there’s little doubt the city of Shawnee will retain that title in the future, thanks to a wonderful program from the Beautification Committee of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. They make sure each third grade student in the public school system receives a small Eastern Redbud tree to plant at home.

Beautification Committee- Shawnee Chamber of Commerce It’s exciting to see the lovingly tended trees rapidly grow taller each year, much like the kids who planted them. Help comes in the form of a booklet, “How to Care for My Baby Redbud Tree,” written by the committee and illustrated by a high school student.

Now entering its fourth year, the tree-planting program not only adds to Shawnee’s beauty, it is an effective living lesson in tree stewardship for a very important audience. For creatively tieing beautification to broader ecological knowledge through its program for third graders, THE SHAWNEE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA, ITS KIDS AND ITS STATE TREE!

UP WITH TREES TULSA

Up With Trees memorial In the aftermath of the devastating terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, the board of directors of Up With Trees knew Tulsans would be seeking a way to express their sorrow and grief for those who lost their lives, as well as offer respect for the many heroes who were part of the rescue efforts.

Up With Trees members The Up With Trees answer was to organize and create a living memorial of one tree for each of the 84 countries directly affected by the tragedy and to put the memorial on a highly visible four and one-half acre median on Interstate 244. The site was further enhanced with donations of a flagpole, two large remembrance signs, a large metal globe of the world and special lighting.

The judges noted this award-winning project tied together involvement from all sectors of the community, has a great design and a long-term effect. We agree with the many V.I.P.s who attended the dedication ceremony in April that UP WITH TREES AND ITS SEPTEMBER 11TH MEMORIAL IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT OF LOVE IN OKLAHOMA!

OKC'S BEAUTIFUL LITTERBLITZ

LitterBlitz logo For the past two years, Oklahoma City’s war on litter – LitterBlitz - has found an invaluable ally in the form of OKC Beautiful. And this year, arming the troops with enough trash bags was a challenge because the troops just kept on coming – the 35-hundred volunteers were about 800 more than the year before.

LitterBlitz members But those volunteers do a great job of making a hard job seem like fun. Each participating team receives supplies of bags, latex gloves, stickers, a mayoral proclamation, flower seeds and even a calorie counter card to tally up the health benefits. The OKC Beautiful staff helps designate locations to clean for those teams that can’t decide on one.

The judges called the three-week springtime effort a “dynamite” project. For successfully using LitterBlitz as a catalyst to inspire continual anti-litter efforts throughout the year, OKC BEAUTIFUL’S LITTERBLITZ IS GOOD NEWS FOR A REALLY CLEAN-LOOKING CAPITAL CITY IN OKLAHOMA!
