Youth AwardsMixed AgesPROJECT R.E.A.D.Y. IN IDABEL
Several years ago, when Idabel was ready for some group to step forward to help beautify the community on a year-round basis, it was an extraordinary group of kids under the banner of Project READY that answered the call. Established to provide recreational and educational alternatives to drugs for at-risk kids ages 6 to 18, the 200 children in Project READY are a vital component in Idabel’s pleasing new appearance.
Each month finds them busily picking up trash on their adopted streets, plus they do general clean-ups of large areas before most of the large-scale community events. When the signs and fences at the Broken Bow Little League baseball field needed painting, the Project READY members were right there, brushes in hand.
Our judges praised this youth program of the Idabel Housing Authority for its ability to reach and teach a large number of kids the value of volunteerism while cleaning and beautifying the community. PROJECT READY IS GOOD NEWS FOR KIDS, FOR IDABEL AND FOR OKLAHOMA’S ENVIRONMENT! 16-18 years oldTRENTON FREDERICK OF BROKEN ARROW
Trent Frederick is not only a young man with a creative vision; he also is an environmentalist of the first order. Worried about the animals whose habitat was being destroyed by a street widening project, this 4-H’er first sought and got a tree-planting grant for a thousand-square-foot area, then used it and his own wildlife survey to secure listings as an Oklahoma Certified Wildscape and a National Backyard Wildlife Habitat.
The ambitious young man didn’t stop there. For each of nine consecutive months, he conducted an activity to advance his newly named 4-H Trail of Dreams Outdoor Classroom. By June, his Broken Arrow classroom consisted of 10 plots, each cleverly related to a 4-H area. A total of about 50 native Oklahoma plants are wonderfully presented.
The judges said they were blown away by his independence and work ethic. We happily concur that TRENT FREDERICK AND HIS URBAN WILDLIFE REFUGE IS GOOD NEWS FOR OKLAHOMA’S URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL NEEDS! Ages 5-11MEDFORD KINDERGARTEN CLASS OF 2001-2002
Take 18 adorable kindergarten kids, give them an outdoor classroom in need of loving care and attention, let them enlist scores of community volunteers for their Clean Team, and then have them show a full auditorium that “Every Day Is Earth Day” with songs and their own writings, and, well, you can’t help but be inspired.
“It’s never too early to make an environmental statement,” the judges said about the impressive yearlong activities of the Medford kindergarteners. A week of Earth Day activities was capped with their proud program of enthusiastic performances and from-the-heart messages.
When you’ve got a teacher like Carole Grover and a classroom of kids who know how to multiply their impact throughout their community, it’s no wonder the judges concluded LAST YEAR’S MEDFORD KINDERGARTEN CLASS IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE EARTH EVERY DAY IN OKLAHOMA! |
