Happy National Chocolate Milkshake Day!

Come one, come all and celebrate National Chocolate Milkshake Day! Tomorrow, September 12th, commemorates America’s favorite frothy chocolate drink in a way which brings together chocolate and ice cream lovers alike.

So in honor of the delicious chocolate surprise, we thought we would celebrate by revisiting some of our nation’s proudest moments in milkshake history.

1885.

This year was the first time the word “milkshake” was used in print. At the time, it referred to an alcoholic beverage. A milkshake was described as a “sturdy, healthful eggnog type of drink with eggs, whiskey, etc., served as a tonic as well as a treat.” Mmm… sounds delicious!!

1900.

By 1900, the milkshake had begun to take on a form more similar to what we’re used to, described as a “wholesome drink made with chocolate, strawberry or vanilla syrup.” By the early 1900s, people began requesting their milkshakes be served with a scoop of ice cream.

1922.

In 1922, a Walgreen’s employee added malted milk powder to the concoction and created the first malted milkshake. That same year, the electric blender was invented by Steven Poplawski. Once this new invention came about, the milkshake really shaped up into our milkshakes of today, taking on the usual frothy and airy form we love.

1930.

By the time the 1930s had rolled around, the milkshake had gained in popularity and was being served in diners and malt shops across the United States.

Present day.

Today, the chocolate milkshake is a national favorite, enjoyed by young and old everywhere. Interested to see how you can get in on the action?

You can celebrate from home today by mixing up your own yummy chocolate milkshake. Just combine 2 cups of chocolate ice cream, your choice of dark chocolate candy (diced), and ½ cup of whipped cream in a blender. Blend it all together, garnish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings and enjoy!

Celebrate this joyous occasion by making a delicious chocolate milkshake with your friends and family. Or, if you’re looking to go out, order one from a nearby restaurant or café, and support your local community. Because when it comes right down to it, nothing tastes better than family time and a smooth chocolate milkshake.
